<image:caption>As I recall, this first batch of 1984 M6 bodies costed about $1,700.00 with the 50mm Summicron f/2. But even at that, it was pricey, quite a bit more than the excellent Nikon flagship F3 (w/lens) at around $850.00 in 1984. A cool new red dot was set loose.</image:caption>

<image:title>Larry McNeil Blogspot - Leica M6 Stands the Test of Time - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>It’s also worth mentioning that in 1984, the year that the ultra-cool Leica M6 was released, the original digital camera (invented by Steven Sasson at Kodak) had been sitting locked away since 1975. The original 1975 digital camera may be viewed as a photography version of a Pandora’s Box, and Kodak kept it locked away from the public for years. The public didn’t know it existed. Critics could point out that this tactic gave film photography another decade of life, but who knows? All we know is that the M6 film camera was so good that it was rereleased in 2022 when digital photography had reached new heights with all its magic.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Regarding holding out for the M6, I’d been using the Leica rangefinders since photo school and was instantly hooked. The IIIF was cheap enough for students at $250, and with our new photography educations, using the Leica was far easier than the large format 4x5 cameras we were commonly using. Leicas are stealth silent and their design encourages you to be more thoughtful with your compositions.</image:caption>

<image:title>Larry McNeil Blogspot - Leica M6 Stands the Test of Time - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>I used the Leica IIIF for this series in the early 1980’s in Western Alaska and could only dream about the secret M6 over the horizon. Don’t let the warm feeling fool you, it was freezing cold just before the snow started flying. The Leica was nearly completely silent and not distracting to people. Everyone was deep in thought and working briskly.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We’re going all over the place in time and this is now 1987 San Francisco with the still fairly new M6 instead of the IIIF. I still love doing street photography and this was a scene I saw often after departing a BART station on lower Market Street. This is titled “Fly don’t walk” and was amongst the first photos I made with the M6 in San Francisco.</image:caption>

<image:title>Larry McNeil Blogspot - Leica M6 Stands the Test of Time - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>By a couple years later in 1987 the M6 was starting to become noticed by more pros and photo enthusiasts. Modern Photography featured it in a small spread and described it well, except the projected price of $2,700 was a little high. The price made the actual leap to $2,300 (the 50mm f/2 was $650 and the 50mm f/1.4 was $1,500). You could get the M6 with a 50mm f/2 for just under $3,000.00.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This is titled “Dad” (from the early 2000’s) and is typical of the visual aesthetic I sometime use. I make visual narratives based on journals. I was still shooting lots of Kodachrome film because of the rich color saturation and impeccable sharpness. Capturing fast moments and doing thoughtful compositions was still very important.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The 15mm is a superwide and is a lens that does take a bit of getting used to. I started out with the Nikon 14mm during the 2020 Covid lockdown. It was when we were all going stir crazy. I got the lens to try something new and liked it so much that I got a superwide for the M6 too, and now it pretty much lives on the camera.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In the midst of the culture of digital photography I still shoot with film because there’s an element of skill and artistry that may be applied with how you expose and process your film. You may get a style that’s unique to your compositions. Same with making darkroom prints. There’s still something magical about how your negatives interact with various darkroom papers combined with a style of printing that may be uniquely your own.</image:caption>

<image:title>Larry McNeil Blogspot - Leica 100th Anniversary “Gotcha questions” - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>I absolutely love shooting with the Leica IIIF because the 50mm lens is sharp and using it becomes fast and intuitive. I can quietly step in closer and not bother the people I’m photographing. This was not long before the M6 was released and I’d been using this IIIF since the start of photography school, so I was very attached to it and knew what it could do. For this composition I wanted a shallow depth of field with the background blurred and Mrs. Kanrilak sharp. That’s where f/2 comes into play with capturing the moment.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/66ae5e3d78fa2b31fdb5491a/f5753ced-c461-4dc6-b1b6-0fe1faca7003/Leica_IIIF_5-CM-Summitar-McNeil_Brooks.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Larry McNeil Blogspot - Leica 100th Anniversary “Gotcha questions” - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Capturing the moment means seeing precisely how we do it. Leica has what feels like a lens for the ages, a 50mm Summitar f/2 (fairly fast for 1955). The Ernst Leitz engineers (Oskar Barnack?) designed a lens that was optimized for high quality negatives and making it compact for travel. Capturing the moment means being on the road, and the innovative lens slides into the camera body when you put it away. That’s timeless innovation. I was shooting a lot of the newly improved Kodak Ektachrome E-6 film in the early 80’s and being able to shoot at f/2 in dim light made this camera and lens combination good for continued use, even as more modern cameras were available. In 1975 I used the Leica IIIF for school assignments because I wanted to learn photography with a classic camera. It took a bit of practice to get used to the rangefinder, but I liked how it slowed down your shooting style and you had to be more careful with your compositions. It harmonized with our new way of using mindfulness with our creativity with learning photography.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This is another photo from their brochure and what struck me about it was I could use it as a family snapshot and travel camera. Just pull it from your pocket and capture those fast elusive shots that usually get away because you don’t have your camera with you. It is why I was able to make so many photos with it over the years, I always had it in my pocket, especially when traveling fast when packing along a camera was sometimes cumbersome.</image:caption>

Each letter has an authoritative clack and it sounds very much like one knows what they’re doing. There’s a thermometer for keeping the Rodinal precisely at 68º (not 67, not 69). <image:caption>ASMP asked to use the “Tonto’s Earthen House” composition for the flyer, which turned out nice. The print was made for a public art project with the Boise City Dept of Arts & History. It was a fun and challenging project where the art resides across the street from a downtown theater, which makes it very fitting. The final size is somewhere around ten feet wide, wrapped around a traffic box. I like that aspect because home in the Northwest Coast, our clan boxes were ornately carved, and my box follows that Tlingit and Nisgaá ethos.</image:caption>

<image:caption>1986, Santa Barbara Brooks Montecito campus with his mom. White cowboy shirt to make them black & white for Larry’s first solo show. The exhibition got a great review in the Los Angeles Times Arts section. Prints sold for $250 each for the handmade darkroom prints that were mostly printed on Agfa Portriga warm tone paper. Canon F-1N camera with his favorite 35mm wide lens. Larry’s mom wanted to see what he was up to in California and saw it was hard work and fun too. The Brooks administrators called her “Mrs. McNeil,” and were very kind.</image:caption>

<image:caption>2000, Larry making a portrait of his mom in her garden and she turned the camera on Larry. Contax G2 system, early reliable autofocus, compact precision camera comparable to Leica. All titanium body, lightweight and fast. Larry was taking care of his toddler for the summer and needed a camera system that could fit in a waist pack because Larry had a big diaper bag full of toys and snacks. Larry’s mom found it amusing and impressive that he could continue with photography while taking care of a toddler. Larry’s shirt was buttoned correctly for the win.</image:caption>
